Interpretive Discussion Question: Why does Santiago talk to himself?

In “The Old Man and the Sea” by Ernest Hemingway, Santiago talks to himself because he is lonesome. An example is that he is in the far out sea with no one in sight or to even talk to. Another example is that he got tired from the lack of sleep, water, and food which led him to speak out thoughts so he can remember them better than in thought. Another example is that by talking to himself he is actually encouraging himself to do better because no one is around to encourage him or help him. That is why Santiago talks to himself.

Interpretation Question
While the old man is out in the ocean fishing in “The Old Man and the Sea”, he tends to talk to himself. This is because he has no one else to talk to. The boy is no longer fishing with him because his father wants him to come and fish on his boat. The old man talks to himself in order to keep himself from going insane. Another reason for this is because there is no one else around. Since there is no one else around, the old man just decides to say his thoughts out loud. Although thoughts are usually kept in your head, the old man chooses not to.

Interpretive Discussion Question #2- Why does Santiago talk to himself?
Santiago talks to himself because he is lonely. Santiago lost his wife; therefore, he lives in his shack all alone. Santiago also fishes alone. He used to fish with “the boy” but “the boy’s” parents didn’t want him to fish with Santiago, who was considered unlucky. When Santiago is out fishing he misses his partner and mentions “the boy” often. All in all, Santiago talks to himself because there is no one else to talk to.

Interpretive Discussion Question- Why does Santiago talk to himself?

In “The Old Man and the Sea” by Ernest Hemingway, Santiago often talks to himself because he is all alone and he has no one to talk to. Back in the town, there was a boy that Santiago frequently talked to. Yet, on his journey, the old man does not have the boy or anyone else to talk to. The boy wanted to come along but, his parents would not let him because Santiago was unlucky in catching fish. Throughout his journey, he talks about the boy and how he wishes the boy could have been there with him. Santiago talks to himself to keep from turning insane, to stay awake and to express his thoughts. All in all, the main reason Santiago talks to himself is because there is no one else around for him to talk to.

Interpretive Question……. Why does Santiago talk to himself?
In the story “The Old Man and the Sea” Santiago talks to himself because he is alone most of the time. Talking to yourself can indeed keep you sane; consequently, the old man tends to speak to himself often. Even though when he is with the boy they do not speak much, silence speaks louder than words and the two men prove that. When Santiago and the boy are together they do not have to talk, they read each others actions saying a million words without a trace of sound; but when Santiago is alone it is a time to share his thoughts with the world around him in “The Old Man and the Sea” by Ernest Hemmingway.

In "The Old Man and the Sea", Santiago is often found talking to himself. He talks to himself because there is no one else around and he is disconsolate. The old man's wife died so now he lives alone in his shack. While the old man is out at sea, he no longer has the boy to talk to because his parents thought that Santiago was unlucky. The old man is always very lonely; therefore, he talks to himself.

Interpretation Question
During "The Old Man and the Sea", Santiago shares thoughts with himself out loud. He even talks to the fish that he is pursuing. The reason for this would be that he is lonely. While reading, the reader figures out that his wife has died and so now he relies on the boy, Manolin, for company. Manolin was forbidden to fish with Santiago anymore because Santiago hadn't caught a fish in eighty four days. The old man misses Manolin while he is fishing and wishes for the boy's presence numerous times. Without his wife, Manolin, and people from the village, Santiago must rely on himself for company.

In "The Old Man and the Sea" by Eranest Hemingway, Santiago talks to himself when he is out in the ocean. Santiago talks to himself a great amount when he is on his trip. He talks to himself because there is no one else to talk to. At one point of his life he did fish with a boy, but the boy's parents wouldn't let him fish with the old man anymore because he would never catch any fish. When Santiago is out fishing he terribly misses the boy, therefore he can't stop talking aloud about the boy. Another example that he talks aloud is that even if anyone heard him talking to himself they would think he is crazy, but still he does this because he is lonely and needs to keep himself occupied.

Interpretation Question
In "The Old Man and the Sea" there aren't people in Santiago's company; therefore, resulting in him talking to himself. The reader ultimately gets the sense that he is lonely. Especially because of the loss of his wife causing him to live alone in a shack. In addition, Manolin a boy who had fished with Santiago was forced to leave him. This is because of Manolin's parents who called Santiago salou or "the worst form of unlucky" wanted him to go work on a more successful boat. This left Santiago all alone; indeed, there is no one to talk to, so Santiago just thinks out loud.

There is a very obvious reason for Santiago to talk to himself. The reason is that he's lonely. Santiago wasn't always alone, he did have a wife but she left him. So now he lives in his shack alone. He also fishes alone. He fished alone until Manolin came along. Thus explain the reason Santiago talks to himself.

Interpretive Discussion

In “The Old Man and the Sea” by Ernest Hemingway, Santiago talks to himself because he is lonely. While he is on the boat he has no one to talk to except himself. He says that he does this so he doesn’t go insane but every since the boy had left he had talked to himself because he had no one else to annoy. Another reason is he may not be talking to himself but he maybe talking to la mar or the sea.

Interpretive question-
Santiago talks to himself almost the whole time when he is out at sea. The main reason seems to be that he is lonely for, in the beginning he states “I wish the boy were here” very frequently. He also seems to talk to himself because he seems to want a conversation between his mind and what he says out loud such as, on page 51 and 52 he says “I wish I had the boy:” then he thinks “ But you haven’t got the boy he thought. You have only yourself and you had better work back to the last line now…” One other reason he talks to himself is that he can remember things better if he says them aloud.

2. Why does Santiago talk to himself?

In “Old Man in the Sea” by Ernest Hemmingway, Santiago talks to himself frequently because he has nobody to talk to. In the town that he used to live in, there was a boy, Manolin, which Santiago regularly talked to. However, Manolin’s parents didn’t want him to go on the boat with Santiago because they knew he was unsuccessful in catching fish. Manolin had had an indescribable care for Santiago, to which he considers him a mentor. In despite of all of this, Santiago talks to himself because he wanted to stay on track with everything and not go crazy. In addition, he also talked to himself so he could communicate his emotions. On the whole, Santiago talked to himself because there was nobody around him to talk to.

In “The Old Man and the Sea” by Ernest Hemingway, Santiago often talks to himself. The reason for this, is because he is filled with lonliness. Santiago lost his wife, so he then lives alone. He also used to fish with the boy from the town, but that ended when the boy's parents wanted him to stop because Santiago was though of as unlucky. This stopping makes him even more lonely. Since his wife past away, he lived in a shack all alone. Also, the company from "the boy" from the town ended shortly. His parents would not let him go with Santiago anymore because he was thought of as unlucky in fishing. Although he goes by himself on his journey, he talks about the boy and how he wishes
he was there with him. Santiago talkes to himself to keep himself from not being too lonley, and allowing to express his thoughts and opinions. All in all, Santiago talks to himself is because he is lonely and there is no one else around to talk to.

Why does Santiago talk to himself?

The main character, Santiago, in Ernest Hemingway's novel "The Old Man and the Sea" talks to himself for a couple of reasons. First off, he is alone, so of course the only person that there is to talk to is himself. Also, he lives alone ever since his wife passed, so the reader can pretty much figure that he is used to having nobody around. Third, he once had a boy come fishing with him, but his parents wouldn't allow it anymore because they thought of Santiago as "unlucky" when he had a fishing slump. Every once and a while, Hemingway wouild mention that Santiago still thinks of the boy. In conclusion, Santiago talks to himself because he is a lonely old man who has only himself as company.

In Ernest Hemingway's novel "The Old Man and the Sea" Santiago, the main character talkes to himself.
He has become very lonely due to the lack of people around him. His wife died and he lives by himself.He says what he thinks due to the lack of rest and food he so dearly needs.He starts to think out loud. He talks to himself because he has no one to talk to and needs to express his feelings.
