Ernest Hemingway was one of the most famous expatriot writers of the 20th century. Like Herman Melville's Moby Dick, Hemingway places his character Santiago against a natural predator. It is a story of personal survival and dignity. Under the discussion questions below, place your commentaries on the reading. Remember to include personal commentary that is supported by text. In the story, "The Old Man and The Sea", the old man seems to not only catch fish, but respect them. The quote, "With his mouth shut and his tail straight up and down we sail like brothers" shows his connection with the fish. They seem to be united. He refers to the fish as his brother in other parts of the story, too; such as on page 95, paragraph 1, in which he says, "But I have killed this fish which is my brother and now I must do the slave work." He thinks of the fish as his brothers, because he's been around them for so long, he shares a deep bond with them.
