Interpreting Quotes
-You killed him for pride and because you are a fisherman. (p. 105)
In Ernest Hemmingway's novel, "The Old Man and the Sea", Santiago says to himelf,"You killed him for pride and because you are a fisherman". Santiago says this to himself because he is trying to give himself reasons as to why he had killed a great marlin. This quote means that it is pride that he wants that led to him killing the marlin. Santiago says this quote because it means that he kills the marlin for the respect that he had for it. Santiago is a fisherman and this is what fisherman do. Santiago tells himself that he killed the fish for pride and because he is a fisherman because he wants to justify and make sure it was alright to kill the marlin. This quote is important because it shows how Santiago wants to make it okay for him to kill the marlin.
Interpreting Quote Question
In the book "The Old Man and the Sea", there is a quote that says "You killed him for pride and because your a fisherman." This quote means that even though Santiago killed the great marlin, he still had respect for it. At first, Santiago felt bad that he killed the marlin but then he realized he had to. He has been unlucky for all this time, and this was "his time to shine" and get what he wanted and needed. Santiago knew he had to kill the fish, and once he did he said aloud " I killed him in self-defense." (pg. 106) This shows the reader that Santiago killed the fish from his heart but most importantly, did it for himself.
Interpereting Quotes #2
In the "Old Man and the Sea", the protagonist Santiago states to himself, "You killed him for pride and because you are a fisherman". He says this because he is trying to find a way to tell himself why he had killed a great fish and that he did not do a bad thing. This quote shows that he killed the fish in order to gain pride and respect not just from himself but from the other fishers. He tells himself that he killed the fish for pride and that is what fisherman do they catch fish kill them and sell them to make a living. So this was a way to make Santiago feel better about killing sucha marvelous creature. This quote brings out the compassionate side of Santiago and shows that he felt bad for the great fish but also felt good for himself for making such a wonderful catch.
Interpreting Quotes
While he is on the skiff, Santiago from "The Old Man and the Sea" has a debate with himself about sin. He feels remorse for killing the fish and cannot decide if it is a sin he is commiting or just following the circle of life. The old man says "You killed him for pride and because you are a fisherman." By stating this aloud to himself, he feels just in killing the marlin. This quote means that he has a right to commit this sin because it is his occupation and that the fish will bring him honor. And so Santiago ends his self-conflict with this: the grand marlin was born to be fished and he was born to fish it.
In the book "Old Man and the Sea" by Ernest Hemingway the protagonist Santiago, says to himself, "You killed him for pride and because you are a fisherman." He says this quote because he tries to make sense of him killing the marlin. Being a fisherman he thought it would be okay to kill the marlin. As in the quote he killed the marlin for pride. He thought if he caught the great marlin he would get more respect from other fisherman. Thus causing him to kill the great marlin.
