Interpretive Quote: They were hateful sharks, bad smelling, scavengers as well as killers, and when they were hungry they would bite at an oar or the rudder of a boat. (pp. 107-108)

In “The Old Man and the Sea” by Ernest Hemingway, the quote “they were hateful sharks, bad smelling, scavengers as well as killers, and when they were hungry they would bite at an oar or the rudder of a boat” described how vicious the sharks are and how evil they are. Not only does it describe the sharks it also shows what Santiago is capable of. When Santiago was fighting the sharks he showed his strength, spirit, and his skill as a fisherman. Santiago showed strength by fighting off the sharks even though he had poor nutrition and poor sleep. He also showed spirit by never giving up even though he was out numbered and had little to protect himself. Lastly, he showed his skill as a fisherman by killing the sharks and avenging the eaten marlin and taking back his pride. In conclusion, this quote described the sharks, but also unlocked some of Santiago’s characteristics to their full potential.
