Interpreting Quote
“Fish,” he said, “I love you and respect you very much. But I will kill you dead before this day ends.” (p.54)
When the old man stated these lines in the story “The Old Man and the Sea” on page 54, they have a strong meaning. It shows part of his character. He says, “I love you and respect you very much.” What he means when he says that he loves the fish is that he is a fisherman and he has been fishing for many years. He respects the fish and what they do because he thinks they are fascinating creatures. In the next part of the quote he says “But I will kill you dead before this day ends.” He says this because he has been with the fish, chasing him for many days. He is fed up with the fish because the fish just wont give up. He keeps putting up a strong fight for his life. Although the man has great respect for the fish, he is willing to kill him and accomplish the goal of catching him. Neither the fish or the old man is giving up. All in all, the fish does loose the battle. This doesn’t only explain what the quote means but it also proves that what the man says was true and he meant what he said.

"Fish," he said, "I love you and respect you very much. But I will kill you dead before this day ends."
Santiago is a fisherman who respects his prey. He believes that fish are captivating living things. When the fish is caught, he feels deeply remorseful toward the fish. He explains his behavior by claiming that slaying the marlin was required by his love and respect for it. Indeed, when Santiago kills the fish, the loss of life is somehow incomparably beautiful, as opposed to the daring, futile scavenging in the shark's way of life.

Interpreting Quotes:

In "The Old Man and the Sea" by Ernest Hemingway, Santiago states that he loves and respects the fish very much but that he will kill him before the day is over. This clearly states that Santiago is a very proud man and although he feels a brotherly connection with the fish he must kill it in order to accomplish his goal and to prove that no matter how strong and determined the fish is, that the old man will win the fight. The reason that he says he loves the fish may also be due to the fact that the fish was to end his 86 days of unluck and misfortune. Santiago has also been with the fish for several days by this time and is loosing strength. He must pull through to destroy the marlin for if he can not, he has lost to his equal.
