Interpretive Question
In “Old Man and the Sea” on page 23 Santiago and Manolin are having a conversation where Santiago says, “I may not be as strong as I think. But, I know many tricks and I have a resolution.” In the conversation Manolin tells Santiago that he is the best fisherman and if he is as strong as he says than there will be no fish to prove them wrong. Santiago is saying, in his quote, that even though he might not be as strong as he says he can still catch a great fish. Santiago means that with his skill, experience and wisdom he will go on to catch a great fish. Santiago uses these lines to show the readers how sure of himself he is and also to give the readers the impression of Santiago being a great fisherman.
