In The Old Man and the Sea by Ernest Hemingway, the quote on pg. 29; “He always thought of the seas as la mar which is what people call her in Spanish when they love her,” has multiple meanings. This quote describes the old man’s character that he thinks of the seas as feminine and learned to love them with his wisdom. The old man is very experienced and knows that even “if she did wild or wicked things it was because she could not help them.” The old man realizes that the new fishermen refer to her as el mar and think of her as just a place or “even an enemy.” This line exemplifies the old man’s great love and patience for the sea no matter what she does. He feels that if you are a wise, old fisherman, that she will withhold great favours for you. In conclusion, this quote shows that the old man has great passion and respect for the sea and however “the moon affects her as it does a woman,” she should always be called la mar.

In Ernest Hemingway's novel "The Old Man and the Sea", the following quotation on page 29 is said. "He always thought of the seas as la mar which is what people call her in Spanish when they love her." This quote shows Santiago's love and compassion for the seas and also shows that the old man thinks of the seas as a woman. Santiago understands the "wicked" and "wild" things that la mar does because he has become familiarized with the ways of the seas. Also, Santiago doesn't like it at all when some of the younger fishermen refer to the seas as el mar. The reader can figure that he thinks it is disrespectful and rude. All in all, Santiago thinks of the seas as la mar because of the beautiful and magnificent being that it is.
