Interpreting Quotes- "It is not bad," he said. "And pain does not matter to a man."
In “The Old Man and the Sea” by Ernest Hemingway, Santiago says the quote “It is not bad,” he said. “And pain does not matter to a man.” on page 84. He makes this statement while he is fishing, just after the fishing line burned his right hand. Santiago hasn’t caught the marlin yet, but he is more motivated now than ever. This quote is significant for it explains that if man wants something bad enough, nothing can stop him. It shows that man is not fazed by pain and that he is strong enough to endure the worst possible pain if he truly wants something. Santiago’s statement demonstrates his mental strength during a challenging predicament.

Interpreting Quotes ... "It is not bad," he said. "And pain does not matter to a man." (p. 84)

In Ernest Hemmingway’s “Old Man in the Sea”, on page 84 Santiago states the following "It is not bad," he said. "And pain does not matter to a man." This quote has a very powerful meaning. It means that Santiago will do anything to catch the marlin, and he means anything. Besides that, this quote shows that when a man desires something, that nothing can stop him from obtaining it, not even the worst circumstances. It furthermore states that no matter how much pain is involved in capturing his desire, he will go through with it. Clearly, as stated above, Santiago’s statement shows that his strength had overpowered everything else when there was a dilemma.
