Ernest Hemingway was one of the most famous expatriot writers of the 20th century. Like Herman Melville's Moby Dick, Hemingway places his character Santiago against a natural predator. It is a story of personal survival and dignity. Under the discussion questions below, place your commentaries on the reading. Remember to include personal commentary that is supported by text. In "The Old Man and the Sea" by Earnest Hemingway, the two characters relate in many ways. Santiago is the older man that has fished for many years in his lifetime and Manolin is the younger boy that has learned to fish well from the help of Santiago. One way that they both are alike is that they both share the wonderful interest in fishing. The both of them also talked about each other very much and said how each of them has put such an impact in their lives. All in all, Santiago and Manolin can't spend a day without caring for each other and spending time talking about fishing all the way to talking about baseball.
